Our work groups and key priorities

The following is a brief summary of the different work groups we have established as part of our Maths Hub work.

Mastery SOL

Mastery SOL

As a hub we have produced a series of learning schemes, assessments and some teaching resources to support teaching for mastery. These schemes now cover Year 1 to Year 9 and we have also developed some mixed year planning for primary. Our schemes have proved extremely useful so far to help teachers understand what teaching for mastery might look like. The fluency, reasoning and problem solving ideas exemplify what depth could look like for each area of mathematics and feedback on these has proved very positive. Next year we are looking to release more teaching materials to complement our schemes and we welcome your ideas about what would be most beneficial to you and your school.
Your continued feedback is invaluable.

Lesson Study

Lesson Study

Following Paul Rowlandson’s visit to Japan we are hoping to conduct a series of lesson studies across our region in 2016 – 17. Lesson study is a professional  learning approach which is designed to improve teaching and learning and the practice and subject knowledge of teachers. It has been shown throughout the world to have dramatic impact where it is implemented correctly. We hope to run
primary and secondary lesson study groups.

Lower KS2 Intervention Programme

Lower KS2 Intervention Programme

Schools are increasingly asking us for help closing the gap with students in KS2 who have fallen behind and do not have a thorough grasp of the key mathematical building blocks. Looking at what we have learned in Shanghai, over the past 12 months we have developed a package of 20 detailed lessons that aim to reinforce key concepts through concretepictorial- abstract approaches. As a hub, we are looking to work with a group of schools from across our region who might be interested in training their Teaching Assistants to use this programme. Although there will be no cost to the schools and all materials will be provided for free, we will not be able to cover release costs for the Teaching Assistants. We are really excited about this programme as we feel it has made a difference on a small scale and are now looking to see if it can have impact in other schools.

Mindsets and More

Mindsets and More

We have developed a series of short CPD videos that aim to focus on a specific area of teaching for mastery. The videos will be released over a 12 month period and will link to resources to support teachers with the content covered in each video. We hope that these videos will also provide a positive message and help spread the idea that everyone can succeed in mathematics, no matter your background or starting point. We are passionate about raising the profile of mathematics in this country, look out for Miss Rose’s videos over the course of the year.
